World Cup 2010: Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan vows to bounce back after Uruguay heartache
Ghana midfielder Asamoah Gyan has vowed to bounce back from his heart-breaking World Cup 2010 quarter-final penalty miss, which saw the last African nation eliminated from the tournament by Uruguay.

The Black Stars crashed out of the South Africa showpiece on penalties after Gyan spurned a gilt-edged chance to seal a semi-final berth deep in extra-time, but smashed his penalty off the bar.

Sulley Muntari had ignited African hopes in the first-half with a stunning long-range curler, before Diego Forlan’s equaliser from a free-kick gave the South Americans parity ten minutes into the second half.

However, despite Uruguay’s Luis Suarez being sent off for handling on the line in extra-time, Gyan failed to take advantage, although he did score from the spot in the penalty shoot-out.

“I’ll bounce back, I’m strong mentally. I had the courage to take the penalty, but that’s normal, I’m the penalty taker,” he told the press after the game.

“But that’s not the game, now he [Luis Suarez] is the hero in his country, the ball was going in, he stopped it and I missed the penalty. That’s the way it is.”
Uruguay now face Holland in the semi-finals in Cape Town on July 6.
