Boxing News Australian fighter, Lionel Rose died on 7th May 2011

The legendary Australian boxer, Lionel Rose, is in top Boxing News every where. Yesterday, he died at the age of 62. He had gotten a stroke in 2007 which paralysed him and he could not speech due to this reason.
The year was 1968 when Rose made sporting history as he became the very first indigenous boxer to grab a world championship in his part. He was only 19 year old when he defeated the Fighting Harado of Japan in Tokyo and secured the world bantamweight title for his country. On his return to Australia, over 100,000 people came in the outskirts of Melbourne Town Hall for greeting him on this success.
Later that year, when he defended this title in California, Elvis Presley wanted to get a memorable photograph with him. In his statement to public, Elvis Presley said about the meeting that he wanted to meet Rose and Rose wanted to meet him. It was so because they both were idols for each other.

Rose was given the title of ‘Australian of the Year’ in 1968 and he became the first Aboriginal person to get this honour. In the world’s recognition, Anthony Mundine, who is three times world champion of boxing, said that Rose is greatest ever Australian fighter. Rose was given the membership of Order of the British Empire in his honour.
Now, when he has died, Mundine says that his loss is still great even if he had left boxing – because, the word ‘Rose’ was an inspirational theme for all Australian boxers – he had God-gifted abilities. He turned into the world champion at the age of 19. He created history in his life. Out of his 53 fights, he won 42 and lost 11. Most of these 11 losses came when his career was reaching its end. Mundine said that he also took him as a symbol in his boxing career.
