Congo’s Rate of Sexual Abuse Is Increasing To Alarming Levels

The American Journal of Public Health has recently published an article in which it claimed that nearly 2 million women were raped in Congo during last year. Congo is a Democratic Republic of Africa. The rate of rape told in study is equal to one woman was raped every minute.
This study tells that the problem of rape is much bigger than it was previously thought to be. Sexual abuse level for women has reached alarming levels in the Capital. And situation is much worst in country’s war-torn areas, especially in the eastern areas of country rate of sexual abuse is much higher than other areas of country. This problem is extending due the primary political conflicts and government policies.

The study says that sexual violence is more generalized in Congo. The ways to reduce the rate of sexual abuse have also been suggested at the end of this report. It was found during study that many rapes in Congo are happening at family level. This aspect of report has brought many fingers on the moral values of Congo’s civilized population.
Public in Congo has been racked by terrorization of rebel groups. Country’s natural resources on eastern part are under control of these rebel groups and these groups are utilizing these resources for spreading terror in the rest of country. They have turned rape into a weapon of war. America’s Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton went to eastern Congo in 2009 where she met rape victims. She did this in order to draw the attention of world towards situation in Congo.
The results of study are still not 100% because many eastern areas of Congo, where war is continuing, have not been included in statistical figures of this report.
