DeSean Jackson Concussion

Kevin Boss was on the bench Sunday afternoon when he caught a glimpse of the ugly video on the scoreboard. There, in high-definition in all four corners of the stadium, was one of an NFL player’s worst fears.

The sight of Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson running full speed at Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson and delivering a vicious helmet-to-helmet collision brought a cheer from the Meadowlands crowd during the Giants’ 28-20 win over the Detroit Lions. For Boss, though, it invoked a different reaction.

“I turned my head the second time because I didn’t want to see it again,” Boss said. “Something needs to be done. It’s getting kind of out of hand.”

What needs to be done, according to Boss, is fewer fines and more suspensions for the rash of ugly and dangerous helmet-to-helmet hits that have infected the NFL this season. It’s a sentiment that was later echoed by Tom Coughlin, who also has apparently seen enough after seeing some of this weekend’s epidemic.

“(If) the money does not seem to be a deterrent, then it has to be more than that,” Coughlin said. “It is quite frustrating, to be honest with you, if a player is forced to leave a game because of an illegal hit and the other player continues. That doesn’t really seem right.”

“I like what Rodney Harrison (the former Patriot who now works for NBC) had to say about how the only time they really got his attention was when they finally suspended him for a game,” Boss said. “He said he put $50,000 away for fines every year to help his reputation, but it really grabbed his attention when he finally got suspended.”
