CINCINNATI – Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot is worth $355 million.

The winning numbers for Jan. 4 are: 4, 8, 15, 25, 47, 42. The Mega Ball is 42.

This lottery is tied for being the fourth largest in American history.  It is estimated that at its peak $240,000 worth of tickets were sold every minute in advance of Tuesday’s drawing.

Forty-one states and the District of Columbia have Mega Millions. Here in the Tri-State those who normally don’t buy tickets couldn’t resist the allure of such a jackpot.

“I never really pay attention to the amounts until it gets big,” said Ray Burton of Colerain Twp.

Burton was like many who bought a few tickets Tuesday evening leading up to the drawing.

“It (winning) would make life a lot easier for my friends and family,” said Tammy Jones of Columbia-Tusculum.

Jones had visions of buying new cars and houses for those she cares about.

Palance Baxter of Walnut Hills dug a dollar out of his wallet when he saw 9 News at a convenience store.

“The first thing I would do is pay off my college tuition and then the sky is the limit,” Baxter said.

Many investment experts view the lottery as a “tax on the poor.”  Studies have shown lower income Americans often liken a lottery ticket to an investment.

Clerks at convenience stores that sell the Mega Millions lottery say some customers will plop down $100-$200 for tickets.  The odds of winning, however, are so remote that even $200 worth of tickets won’t offer much in the way of winning chances.

The odds of winning the jackpot are about one in 175 million.  Even if one were to spend $1 million on tickets the odds would still be 175 to 1.  A bad bet by most standards.
